What Do You Do If You’ve Been Exposed To HIV?

If you have had an exposure to HIV it’s important to seek medical attention immediately.

If it has been less than 72 hours you may be eligible for PEP (post exposure prophalaxis) treatment.

PEP is a specialised use of HIV medications to help prevent HIV virus from taking hold in the body. It has been shown to be highly effective in reducing the chance of HIV infection.

When you are offered PEP there is a range of tests you will need to have done including an initial HIV test to ensure you have not been previously exposed to the HIV virus.

PEP is a one month treatment and your doctor will be able to explain as part of his consultation with you.
